Have you ever heard of ‘Agroforestry’?
It is a farming practice that integrates forestry with agriculture or livestock in forested areas. It emerged as an alternative to protect environments destroyed by slash-and-burn agriculture.
Today, I’d like to introduce Aby(Abyatar), the first fellow I’m featuring from the 3rd cohort of Asia Beautiful Fellows. Aby is working to preserve the environment and realize a sustainable coffee industry in Indonesia through eco-friendly farming methods like agroforestry. For example, he plants coffee trees alongside fertilizing trees to improve soil fertility, reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, and promote environmental sustainability.
To achieve this, Aby continuously provides training to farmers collaborating with Adena Coffee on sustainable farming practices, including soil health and fertility management, harvesting and post-harvest processing, water management and conservation, and managing crop shade. Recently, he launched a pilot project in Bali to establish a regenerative agriculture coffee farm. As part of this, he is exploring ways to convert agricultural waste, which would otherwise emit carbon, into 'biochar' that can be repurposed as organic fertilizer.
Through this approach, Aby and Adena Coffee produce coffee that reduces environmental impact and showcases the unique traits of the region, helping both Indonesian farmers and the environment achieve sustainability. Let me share the story of Aby and Adena Coffee with you!
What is Adena Coffee?

"We offer coffee that supports livelihoods and sustainability in local communities."
'Adena Coffee' is a company dedicated to producing and selling coffee in a way that protects the environment and enhances the livelihoods of local communities. Using eco-friendly practices such as organic farming and agroforestry, they work to solve issues related to soil health and local economic challenges.
Adena Coffee started back in Aby's college days when he first became interested in coffee. While working as a barista, Aby traveled to coffee production areas and witnessed the harsh realities for farmers. He realized that farmers lacked the knowledge to produce high-quality coffee in an eco-friendly way and struggled to find good market opportunities. To address these issues, he started his first community project in Kenawat village, located in the Gayo Highlands of Aceh.
The Aceh region, which Aby focused on, is one of the largest producers of Arabica coffee in the Asia-Pacific. However, the region had been plagued by the Aceh Free Movement (GAM) and autonomy disputes with the Indonesian government for nearly 30 years, from 1976. Even after the peace agreement, the region's reputation as a conflict zone led many consumers to hesitate in buying coffee from Kenawat. By producing high-quality coffee with Adena Coffee, consumer perceptions began to change, and in 2022/2023, they even ranked 9th in the Cup of Excellence.
Through these experiences, Aby realized that the sustainability of the environment and farming communities are closely interconnected, and he proposed organic farming and agroforestry as solutions. These methods not only reduce negative environmental impacts but also allow farmers to create added value, increasing their household income while preserving their land. In other words, they help lay the foundation for healthier, more sustainable growth for coffee farms and the local communities.
Adena Coffee wants to tackle these issues

Excessive use of chemicals and water resources during coffee cultivation and production can negatively impact the ecosystem. Unregulated expansion of coffee farms increases the risk of deforestation, leading to a loss of biodiversity and exacerbating the effects of the climate crisis.
Indonesia’s coffee industry is vast and has a significant impact on both the environment and society. According to the Rainforest Alliance, some farmers lack proper knowledge of soil management, which leads to the excessive use of chemicals and ultimately degrades soil quality.
Additionally, many farmers harvest coffee cherries without properly distinguishing their maturity, resulting in inconsistent quality. They often lack the incentive to invest additional resources in harvesting and post-harvest processes. This sometimes leads to coffee trees being cut down prematurely and replaced with other crops, which can have negative environmental impacts.
Sustainable agriculture is essential to addressing these environmental and social issues in the coffee industry. Aby and Adena Coffee's methods are crucial because they seek to harmonize regional community economic development with environmental protection.
What does Adena Coffee do?
"Our goal isn't just about coffee, it's about connection."
โ Pursuing an eco-friendly value chain in the coffee industry
Adena Coffee is committed to minimizing environmental impact right from the coffee cultivation stage. Since chemical fertilizers can seep into the soil and groundwater, causing pollution, they promote the use of organic fertilizers and advocate agroforestry practices, such as planting coffee trees alongside other crops. This approach not only reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers but also improves soil health, boosting crop yields. Additionally, by growing other crops, farmers can create opportunities for supplemental income.
Currently, Adena Coffee collaborates with farmers in over 30 villages across four regions. On the technical side, they research crop varieties and soil conditions suited to each area's environment, adopting methods that reduce water usage while maintaining quality. These efforts ensure stable production even in the region’s hot and humid climate. In partnership with local farmers, Adena Coffee employs eco-friendly practices such as natural drying methods and reusing packaging materials to minimize environmental impact. Their ultimate goal is to preserve biodiversity and establish a resilient agricultural ecosystem. From green bean production to packaging, Adena Coffee prioritizes the environment at every step. Isn’t that inspiring?

"By fostering a culture of responsible sourcing, environmental awareness, and collaborative action, we aim to cultivate a sustainable future."
โก Supporting Empowerment programs for Coffee Farmers
Aby and Adena Coffee are dedicated to helping farmers adopt eco-friendly farming practices and adapt to changing climates through a variety of long-term training programs and knowledge-sharing workshops. These programs cover topics such as creating optimal environments for coffee growth, pest and disease management, water conservation, and proper harvesting and post-harvest processing techniques. By equipping farmers with these skills, Adena enables them to deepen their understanding of sustainable coffee farming while ensuring both environmentally friendly cultivation and stable income generation.
In addition, Adena Coffee supports farmers in achieving sustainable income through agroforestry. By intercropping coffee trees with other crops, farmers can make efficient use of their land while enjoying an additional source of income during non-harvest periods. Adena offers step-by-step training on cultivating diverse crops, such as avocados, helping farmers adapt to climate change while diversifying their revenue streams. This multi-faceted approach ensures that farmers are well-prepared to face future challenges while maintaining profitability.

โข Supporting Local communities and Educational Programs for Children in Coffee Farms
Adena Coffee focuses on the close connection between coffee, producers, and their environment, striving for sustainable practices across the board. One of their key goals is to preserve the cultural heritage of local coffee-growing communities and support disadvantaged groups. Local managers, deeply rooted in their communities, maintain close communication and run various activities to support this mission.
They particularly focus on after-school programs for children in coffee-farming communities. In the Gayo region, they established a soccer school for children, while in Flores, they teach not only English but also the life wisdom and values emphasized by the community. During harvest time, children visit farms to experience coffee cherry picking and even have the chance to sell the cherries to Adena Coffee . The money they earn is saved up for when the new school term begins. The goal is not to make the children work but to help them understand their parents’ work and gain positive experiences related to agriculture. Through such efforts, Adena Coffee helps connect all members of the community around coffee.

โฃ Securing Market Access through Fair Trade and Continuous Quality Improvement
Farmers, particularly in Kenawat, often struggle to find markets for their coffee. Adena Coffee is committed to ethical business practices while constantly working to expand its reach. Through partnerships with local farmers, they create pathways for stable sales and export Indonesian coffee to markets in Japan, Europe, Taiwan, and beyond, helping globalize Indonesian coffee. They also actively promote eco-friendly specialty coffee and local communities by utilizing regional networks and media to expand both domestic and international consumer markets and spread the culture of sustainable consumption.
Adena Coffee’s close partnerships with farmers are key. They ensure farmers receive fair compensation while providing customers with custom blends that appeal to targeted audiences. Adena buys beans from farmers at prices above the market rate and applies seven detailed quality control standards from harvest to final product to ensure top-quality coffee. These efforts are crucial in establishing Adena Coffee as both an eco-friendly and commercially viable coffee brand.
People working with Adena Coffee
โ COO, Joseph Huan
I’m a high school friend of Aby. We've always loved coffee since we were kids, and visiting coffee farms to taste different coffees was a hobby of ours. In college, I studied engineering while Aby studied social sciences, and during that time, we researched coffee farmers together. We had many deep conversations about social enterprises, and it was Aby who first suggested starting a coffee business. Since I’ve always been passionate about social enterprises and charity, I happily agreed to join him. Finding the right partners and working with various communities wasn’t easy, but through a lucky turn of events, we were able to connect with trustworthy people. Now, we're selecting communities based on their potential and production capacity to create a positive impact.
We focus on agroforestry and organic methods, offering education and field monitoring to farmers. By maintaining good relationships with farmers who work with Adena Coffee, we persuade them to adopt eco-friendly farming methods by offering fair prices. We also educate them on reducing chemical fertilizers and finding ways to increase yields, tailored to each region's characteristics. Thanks to Adena Coffee’s efforts, farmers' participation has increased, exports are booming, and the local image has improved.

I am the community coordinator for the Flores region, running an after-school program called Kopintar, where I teach children about coffee farming methods, characteristics, and the right mindset with 67 students. Even if only three children show up, I always make sure to teach them.
I decided to work with Aby because we share the same mission for communities, culture, and sustainability. That’s why I returned to Flores, focusing on education but monitoring the high-quality coffee production process.
Since collaborating with Adena Coffee, I've witnessed positive changes through education. Farmers have come to understand the value of coffee and the importance of the selection process, and they no longer use any chemicals in coffee trees. Leading community leaders and farmers are challenging, but I actively communicate with Aby, focusing on finding positives within problems and working together to solve them.
